My dad has tought me well. Yes,it is none other that the "The Real Slim Shady!" (A.K.A Brian Stone)That's what he calls himself. Anyways we're getting off the subject. Did you go through The Great Depression? If you did or knew someone who has please give me some info. I'm going to try to do a report. Not 'cause I want, but because it sounds fun but hard. Hi there! I found your link on your dad's blog so I thought I'd see what you've got going on in here.

My parents were born at the tail end of the Great Depression (1936 and 1939, respectively). However, when my grandparents were alive, they remembered things about it.

My dad's parents farmed, and they had to tighten their belts. They weren't hit as hard with things like pest problems, crop diseases of any kind that I'm aware of, but they knew other farmers that weren't so lucky.

I'm not so sure what my mom's parents did - my mom's father worked as a machinist (someone who makes machine parts) for many years, was a part-owner of a gas station, and worked for WPA (a government program that put out-of-work people on government projects like building dams, paving roads, etc).

I think it's good to learn about things like The Great Depression. World War II actually was a driving force (among others) that got the economy back on track again.

Let me know if there's anything I can find for you here in the DC area. Ask your dad - he'll vouch for my coolness. I have a niece about your age, so I know the language.

When I was 11, a mere 34 summers ago, my activist Dad insisted I read "the Grapes of Wrath", and immediately dispatched me to the Helen M Plum Library. They told me I was too young, and sent me home. My Dad went back, checked it out, and told me "you have two weeks to finsih it" And I did. Great book, for a time before VHS and Netflix DVD.

Aubree,
I'm mailing you a newspaper article from a California newspaper I used to work for. It's the story of a family from Beggs, Oklahoma who moved to California in 1936, and what their life was like as migrants from the Dust Bowl.

I knew the family personally. Most are dead now. I'll send the article in care of your father since I have his address.

Well, my late Father arrived right in the middle of The Great Depression. He was a teenager and I can remember him telling me of how many, many people had no jobs, no place to live and no food to eat. He became an apprentice under his older brother and together they started a bakery company making twist pretzels, bagels and loaves of bread. THree day-old bread that was not sold to groceries they gave to the homeless. It was a period of gloom and my experience is that those who lived through it developed a toughness, an ability to survive no matter what. Eventually President Roosevelt developed something called the Works Project Adminstration that put people back to work on construction projects such as the Hoover Dam and overall repairing America's roads and bridges--nearly all of which was built so well it is still around! I hope this was helpful!
